About the event

Toile is a classic type of pattern used on cloth, wallpaper, and housewares. It originated in Ireland and then was further developed in the town of Jouy in the suburbs of Paris. Kristen Cliffel has been using toile in her own work to illustrate moments in her own daily life.

Learn how to make a repeating pattern from your own design like in classic Toile de Jouy! We will be working with themes of your choice. Common themes include mythology, family, and culture. The story is told using decorative motifs such as animals, people, plants, and special events. Feel free to bring reference materials such as snapshots, photos, and or objects from your life. We will provide magazines, books, and all the materials you need to create your very own repeating Toile de Jouy pattern. Maybe you can make your own wallpaper or fabric!
